What Are Online Users Looking For When They Surf?
Released: 11/29/2004
By: Elizabeth Winslett
BIRMINGHAM, AL - Online surfers are an interesting bunch. In fact, it’s hard to pin down exactly how they judge a website’s credibility. Asking people what they look for doesn’t provide a lot of help either. According to a recent Stanford University study, online surfers said a privacy policy and business affiliations helped them judge a site’s credibility. Although, their actual online habits prove other factors are much more important.
So if privacy policies and business affiliations aren’t the answer, exactly what is? According to the Stanford study, people first judge a company by the quality of its website appearance. If a company has a nice, clean professional site it’s a good start. A site’s appearance is the first key in retaining visitors and building a solid business image, but that is not the only important element. According to the study, it is content. A good design grabs the user’s attention while content keeps them from leaving. Plain and simple, people are looking for something and you are the hero when you provide it. Content should not be an afterthought in the design of your site, it should be the center of it. The more concise the content you can provide – the better. If a site’s inviting appearance can help retain visitors, its quality content will sell the products or services.
A lot of design firms concentrate more on design than content or vice versa but a good design firm can successfully merge both when creating a company’s site. An equal balance of design and content is the pivotal to a successful website.
